Safety and Security

An Important Note from the VP of International ProgramsOver the last month, two robberies took place to GRCC students near Gentry Walk. One involved a group of four young men and three of our students at 11pm, the other involved a man who stole a purse from one of our students at the short cut between Gentry Walk and GRCC.

We are taking this very seriously. We just had a big meeting between GRCC Safety, Auburn Police, King County Police, International Student Housing, Dean of Students, and others. Here is a summary of the meeting:
· Auburn Police said that the area of the apartments near GRCC is actually pretty safe. The two crimes were unrelated, and were the only such robberies in the area this school year. It was bad luck the two happened so close to each other.
· We reviewed ideas on how to help. We’ll decide which ones to do in about two weeks. Here are the ideas:
o Have a patrol car patrol the area much more often
o Improve street lighting
o Have activities for our students on how to be safer
o Have more “Safety Rides”, even in daytime
o Have safety presentations in IESL classes

Here are things you can do to be safer NOW:o Walk in groups or take the Safety Rides to the off-campus apartments or houses
o If you see people who look like “bad guys”,
turn around and go back
o Call 911 (the Police). You don’t have to know if they are bad guys for sure. The Police will find out. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to call.
o If anything bad happens, shout “Fire! Fire! Fire!”. Usually people will come to help.

If you hear about any crime, let me know. We’ll let you know what we’ll do to make the area more safe in the next newsletter. Have a good quarter!

My best

Ross Jennings
Vice President - International Programs

Is your illness contagious???

Sometimes when we're sick we can be "contagious". That means you can easily pass your sickness to others. The Flu, Pink eye, Chicken Pox and Strep Throat are all examples of very serious contagious illnesses. If you are contagiously ill then you should visit the doctor and get treatment. You should also email your instructor and stay at home until you are no longer contagious. If you have a mild cold that also may be contagious, but is not usually a serious problem. Wash your hands often and cover your sneezes! Please be careful and respectful to
your classmates, teachers and staff at GRCC.
