Winter 2009 E-Newsletter Issue #4

Important Dates

Feb 27, 2009 (Friday)
  • Last day to drop a class. (Withdrawal Form: Click here)
  • Last day to submit pass/no credit to enrollment services. (P/NC Form: Click here)
You MUST see an advisor to drop your class/es.

What is the difference between dropping and a Pass/Non- Credit?

Dropping a class means that you will no longer be taking that class. You will receive a permanent "W" on your transcript if you drop this late in the quarter. Drops require an instructor signature and must be processed through the IP Office.

Changing to Pass/Non-Credit is another option. With this option, you are still enrolled in the class, but instead of a grade you receive a "P" on your permanent transcript, if you pass the class with a GPA of 1.5 or above, or an "NC" (no credit) if you do not pass. The application for Pass/Non-Credit is to be submitted to Enrollment Services in LC before the above deadline.

Remember, you must maintain a minimum of 12 credits to remain in status with your visa requirements.

Registration for Spring 09

Many of you are probably nervous about getting exactly the instructor you want for all of your classes this spring quarter. That may be a reality. For now, do this:

1,Do your best to register for the classes and instructors you want.

2, If you don't get your favorite teacher,

  • Sign up for another section, and

  • Get on your favorite teacher's waiting list.

If an instructor isn’t listed next to the class, then the department has not assigned the class to an instructor yet. Do not wait to register for it because many times you do not know until the first day of the quarter.

University of Washington Foster School of Business

Are you a Business student and did you apply to UW? If the answer is yes, don't forget to apply to the Foster School of Business. The deadline is April 5th, 2009. Register for the Writing Skills Assessment here. Find more information about the UW business school, click here.

When is the best time to see an advisor on a “walk in” basis?

Normal IP walk in hours are from 10am to noon and again from 1-5pm. Advisors are always happy to help answer your questions and assist you with your academic success. However, if you come in at either 11:45 am or after 4:30pm and it is very busy, you may risk being turned away, even after waiting. The 1pm hour also tends to be busy with a longer wait time. So come in the morning if possible for the best chance at a short wait time!

Tax Season is here! If you work you must file a tax report!

If you have worked in the US you are required to pay taxes. We are not allowed legally to offer you advise about your tax reporting, but we do want you to be aware of your responsibility. UT Austin has put together a very helpful web page for international students regarding taxes. Click here to be connected directly.

Info for IESL Students In-class registrations forms will be distributed in your Reading/Writing classes starting on Tuesday, Feb. 17th. They will be used to determine your plans for next quarter. When you fill it out, please be sure all of your information is accurate and up to date. If you plan on taking a vacation quarter, transferring, or going home please be sure to see your advisor as soon as possible. If you plan on attending GRCC, you will be registered upon receipt of your form. If you are not sure of your plans, an IESL staff member will follow up with you in a few weeks.
