University of Washington Transfer Admissions Information Sessions!

UW is offering 2 extra transfer admissions information sessions before the February 15th deadline for Fall Quarter transfer applications. These sessions are likely to be small, so students will have the chance to ask questions! Please note that these sessions will be offered in addition to the services and information sessions at Transfer Thursday, and that no academic advising will be available at these additional sessions.
WHEN: Tuesday 2/2, and Tuesday 2/9 from 1:30 – 2:20pm

University Application Essay Support

Make an appointment with Melanie for any Thursday morning in the IP office to get feedback and advice on your personal statement(s). Melanie is available to help you on Thursdays from 9:00am until noon.

Central WA University is hosting an Info Session and Chocolate Party!

Feb 11th, from noon to 1pm in IVC 101
Learn about majors, transferable credits, scholarships, student services and more
From 1pm the recruiter will be available for several hours to meet students individually

Did You Miss the International Transfer Fair on Jan 27th?

There is another transfer fair coming up (mainly for domestic students) on February 16th. This fair will be much smaller but the representatives are happy to talk to international students as well as domestic students. Angela Gaffney, from Western Washington University is going to be representing Western at the domestic Transfer fair in the cafeteria from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. She emailed us to say that any international students should please come and stop by her table if they’re interested in transferring to WWU.

Job Opening: IP is Seeking a Student Marketing Assistant for Japan
Qualifications:
- Ability to type speed a minimum of 30 words per minute
- Fluent in writing and speaking English (academic level)
- Fluent in Japanese
- Familiar with computer applications (Internet, MS Word, Excel, Access), especially powerpoint
- GRCC student for at least two quarters so far
- Plan to continue at GRCC for one more academic year

Tax Season is here! If you work you must file a tax report!

If you have worked in the US you are required to pay taxes. We are not allowed legally to offer you advise about your tax reporting, but we do want you to be aware of your responsibility. UT Austin has put together a very helpful web page for international students regarding taxes. Click here to be connected directly.

Seeking Student Feedback

The President Search Committee is seeking feedback from the college community as we hire a new GRCC President. What do you think are important qualities and considerations for our next president? Your input is valuable to GRCC. Submit your thoughts online today! There is a link for students to fill out some questions on the right corner of the website.

If you are Sick and need a Doctor
If you are sick and need to see a doctor, take your insurance card with you. You may need to make an immediate co-payment of $20 with your student insurance. Emergency room visits can be quite costly, so avoid ER unless you have a life threatening emergency! Also, you will want to contact your teachers (email works best) if you need to be absent from class. Ask for a note to excuse your absence when you visit the doctor.
There are three MultiCare Clinic in the area which are open for walk in, but the closest is Auburn MultiCare, located a block South of Safeway at 202 Cross St SE. For more information (maps, bus routes and clinic office hours) come to the IP Office.

Transferring to University in 2010?
Are you ready to transfer? Have you chosen at least five schools to apply to? Application deadlines are fast approaching. Check the university deadline list on Angel! You will need to prepare many documents. Most require: a financial statement, transcripts from high school and college (GRCC transcript request link), TOEFL or IELTS, along with your complete application. Check under admissions for your school to know which documents are required. Prepare early! All of this takes time.

Also, don’t delay starting your essays. If you need help with your application essays you can contact Melanie Kaneshiro to schedule an appointment, mkaneshiro@greenriver.edu.

No Academic Advising on Jan 25th and 26th

The Advisors will be away at a conference on January 25th and 26th. The IP office will be open for general questions at the front desk, I-20 signatures, as well as for High School Completion and IESL needs.

12 Credit Rule

All academic students must register for a minimum of 12 credits to be in compliance with the immigration regulations. If you are not registered for at least 12 credits, please talk to your advisor immediately.

Schedule a Thursday NSA

If this is your first academic quarter, you must schedule your new student appointment (NSA) with your assigned advisor at the IP office. If you fail to complete your appointment by the 8th week of the quarter, your registration account will be blocked. Yikes!

Don't forget to Update Your Address!
If you recently moved, please click here to update your address. The immigration law requires that you update your new address within 10 days of your move.

International Transfer Fair

Bring your transfer questions and get them answered by university representatives!

University of Washington Bothell
Due to the increase in volume of applications at the University of Washington Bothell, prospective transfer students should apply early for spring and fall 2010. The website says “Applications received after the priority date will be considered for admission on a space available basis.” However, this year UW Bothell has told us that application priority dates may become the closing dates. All application materials must be submitted by the deadline for full consideration.

Peer Volunteer Applications

Applications for spring/summer Peer Volunteers will be available by the end of next week (Jan 22). Please come to the front desk of the IP Office to pick one up and get more detail about the position. Applicants must be available to volunteer for BOTH spring and summer quarters.

Are you unsure of your major? Are you interested in learning more about your personal strengths? Find out which careers fit your personality and interests. There are three unique assessment tests you can take in the Welcome Center. Each one costs just $20, which is a half rate just for students!
